Best Species for Outdoor Use

Not all reclaimed wood is suitable for outdoor applications. Species with natural rot resistance perform best: Western Red Cedar (Class II durability, natural thujaplicins resist decay), old-growth Redwood (Class I durability, high tannin content), White Oak (Class II, tyloses block water penetration), and reclaimed Ipe/tropical hardwoods (Class I, extreme density).

Douglas Fir can be used outdoors if properly sealed, but it has no natural rot resistance and will deteriorate faster than Cedar or Redwood without ongoing maintenance. Pine and Hemlock should generally be avoided for ground-contact outdoor applications unless pressure-treated.

Treatment and Protection

Even naturally durable species benefit from a quality exterior sealer. We recommend penetrating oil-based sealers with UV inhibitors for all outdoor reclaimed wood. Apply a generous first coat to dry wood, allow 24 hours, and apply a second coat. Reapply every 2-3 years for horizontal surfaces (decks, tables) and every 3-5 years for vertical surfaces (fencing, siding).

For ground-contact applications (raised beds, retaining walls, posts), use naturally rot-resistant species only and expect eventual replacement. Even Cedar and Redwood will eventually decay when in constant contact with moist soil — plan for a 15-20 year lifespan rather than permanent installation.

Project Ideas

Decking: Reclaimed Ipe or Cedar boards create stunning, durable outdoor floors. Pergolas: Douglas Fir timbers (4x6 and 6x6) provide structural strength and visual mass. Fencing: Mixed-species boards in varying widths create a distinctive, organic look. Garden beds: Reclaimed 2x12 Cedar makes rot-resistant raised beds. Outdoor furniture: Thick reclaimed planks (2x8, 2x10) make beautiful, heavy-duty tables and benches.
