Board feet needed

What We Carry & Why It Matters

Our inventory spans five distinct product lines, each curated to serve a different need — but united by a single principle: every board, beam, and bracket should earn its place through quality, character, and conscientious sourcing. We have been pulling usable lumber out of demolition sites across Southern California and the broader West Coast since our founding, and our buying relationships with demolition contractors, barn salvagers, and industrial-facility managers mean our yard turns over continuously.

Unlike a conventional lumberyard where every 2x6 looks identical, our inventory rewards curiosity. A single pallet of reclaimed Douglas Fir may include boards from a 1920s warehouse, a 1940s cannery, and a 1960s cold-storage facility — each with its own grain story, nail holes, and surface history. That variety is not a defect; it is the point. For the projects that demand uniformity, we carry FSC-certified new stock as a supplement, not a default.

Whether you are a general contractor pricing a full-floor installation, an architect sourcing accent beams for a hotel lobby, or a weekend woodworker looking for a single walnut slab, our staff works with you at the scale your project requires. Walk-in customers are welcome; large-project buyers get dedicated account support.

The Environmental Case for Reclaimed Wood

Choosing reclaimed lumber is one of the highest-impact material decisions you can make on a construction or renovation project. The numbers below reflect our yard's operational averages and peer-reviewed lifecycle analysis data for reclaimed versus virgin timber.

Beyond carbon: reclaimed wood also reduces the demand for forest clearing, eliminates the chemical inputs of new tree cultivation, and keeps embodied energy already spent on original milling and kiln-drying within the supply chain. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory estimates that displacing one ton of new lumber with reclaimed stock prevents approximately 3.4 tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions when full lifecycle accounting is applied. Every project that specifies reclaimed material compounds these benefits at scale.

Volume Pricing & Trade Accounts

We work with contractors, designers, architects, and large-scale DIYers every day. Volume discounts are applied automatically at checkout for online orders and quoted directly by our sales team for yard purchases. Trade accounts also receive priority access to new inventory arrivals before pieces are listed publicly.

Board foot (BF) volumes are calculated across all product lines combined in a single order. Mixed-species orders count toward volume tiers. Discounts do not apply to delivery fees, engineering reports, or third-party services.

How We Process Every Board

Reclaimed lumber is only as good as the process used to prepare it. We apply a consistent six-step intake and grading protocol to every piece that enters our yard.

01

Source Verification

We document the origin building, approximate construction date, and demolition contractor for every acquisition. This allows us to flag potential hazmat concerns (lead paint, creosote, asbestos-adjacent materials) before wood enters the yard.

02

De-nailing & Metal Detection

All boards are de-nailed by hand with pry bars and pneumatic tools. A metal detector pass catches embedded fasteners invisible to the eye — critical for preventing damage to planer and saw blades downstream.

03

Moisture Testing

Representative boards from each batch are tested with a calibrated pin-type moisture meter. Batches above 19% MC are segregated for air-drying before sale. Moisture content is recorded and available on request.

04

Visual Grading

Each board is graded against our internal scale: Structural (load-bearing capable), Select (character marks, tight knots, sound), Standard (prominent character, suitable for most uses), and Rustic (heavy checking, splits, or nail-hole density; decorative use only).

05

Species Identification

Our staff identifies species by grain pattern, color, weight, and end-grain characteristics. For unusual or disputed species, we use a loupe and reference samples. Accurate species labeling is essential for matching existing work and selecting appropriate finishes.

06

Inventory & Pricing

Graded boards are measured, tallied in board feet, photographed, and entered into our inventory system. Pricing reflects species, grade, dimension, and current market scarcity. Inventory is updated daily on our website.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if reclaimed lumber is structurally sound?

Every piece in our structural inventory is inspected by our yard team for checks, splits, end-checking, active decay, and significant knot clusters that reduce load capacity. For engineered applications, we offer third-party grading and span-table calculations from licensed structural engineers. Decorative-grade pieces are sold clearly labeled and are not intended for load-bearing use.

Do your boards contain lead paint or other hazardous materials?

Boards sourced from pre-1978 structures are tested for lead paint as part of our intake process. Any boards with confirmed lead paint are either stripped, encapsulated, or redirected to non-interior applications. We provide testing documentation on request. Creosote-treated railway timbers are stocked separately and are clearly labeled for exterior or non-food-contact applications only.

What does "board foot" mean and how do I calculate what I need?

A board foot is a unit of volume equal to a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long (144 cubic inches). To calculate: (Thickness in inches × Width in inches × Length in feet) ÷ 12 = Board Feet. We recommend adding 15–20% waste factor for cutting and defect allowances. Our team is happy to help estimate quantities from your plans.

Can I visit the yard to hand-select pieces?

Yes — and we strongly encourage it for any project where character, color matching, or grain pattern matters. Our Los Angeles yard is open Tuesday through Saturday. Bring your dimensions and project photos and our staff will pull candidate pieces for your review. Hand-selection is standard practice for all beam, slab, and premium hardwood orders.

What is the moisture content of your inventory?

Air-dried dimensional lumber in our yard typically reads 12–18% MC depending on the season. Kiln-dried stock is available for most species and runs 6–10% MC. For interior flooring and furniture, we recommend kiln-dried or acclimating air-dried stock in your space for a minimum of two weeks before installation. We provide moisture content readings on request.

Do you deliver, and what are the minimums?

We deliver throughout the greater Los Angeles area and can arrange freight shipping nationwide for larger orders. Local delivery minimum is 200 board feet or $300 order value. Long-distance freight minimums vary — contact us for a quote. For smaller orders, will-call pickup is always available at our yard.
