What Determines the Price
Reclaimed lumber pricing is more nuanced than commodity lumber. Every piece carries its own history, species characteristics, and processing requirements. These are the factors our team evaluates when quoting both buying and selling prices.
| Pricing Factor | Price Impact | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Species | High | Old-growth Douglas fir, heart pine, and chestnut command significant premiums over common species like hem-fir or SPF. |
| Condition & Grade | High | Structural-clear grade can be 40–70% more valuable than utility or lower grades. Surface defects, checks, and end splits reduce value. |
| Dimensions | Medium–High | Wider and thicker stock (6x6 and above) is proportionally more valuable than standard dimensional lumber because it is harder to source. |
| Length | Medium | Longer boards (16 ft+) carry a length premium. Boards under 8 ft may be discounted due to limited applications. |
| Processing Level | Medium | Rough-sawn reclaimed lumber is priced lower than de-nailed, cleaned, or milled material. Each processing step adds value. |
| Provenance | Medium | Documented origin (e.g., 1920s warehouse, century-old barn) adds premium for design and historic preservation buyers. |
| Moisture Content | Medium | Kiln-dried stock (6–8% MC) commands higher prices than green or air-dried material due to stability and immediate usability. |
| Quantity | Low–Medium | Volume orders receive tiered discounts. Unit price decreases predictably above 1,000, 5,000, and 20,000 board feet. |
| Delivery Distance | Low | Local delivery (within 50 miles of Commerce, CA) is included on orders above 1,000 BF. Longer distances are priced separately. |
Volume Pricing Tiers
Reclaimed lumber is sold by the board foot (BF). One board foot equals 144 cubic inches of wood — roughly a 1" thick board, 12" wide, 12" long. As order volumes increase, unit pricing decreases. Here are our standard tiers:
| Tier | Volume | Discount | Additional Perks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail | 1–999 BF | List price | Standard lead time, will-call or delivery |
| Contractor | 1,000–4,999 BF | 8–12% off list | Priority scheduling, sample service, net-30 available |
| Commercial | 5,000–19,999 BF | 15–20% off list | Dedicated account manager, reserved inventory, flexible payment |
| Wholesale | 20,000+–No ceiling | Negotiated | Standing orders, early access to new inventory, custom processing included |
Discounts apply to standard in-stock material. Custom milling, kiln drying, and special species are priced separately. Contact us for a commercial account application.
Our Quality Guarantee
We stand behind every board foot we sell. Here is what that commitment looks like in practice.
30-Day Grade Guarantee
If the material you receive does not meet the graded specifications on your order documentation, we replace it or refund in full — no questions asked.
Moisture Content Verified
Every shipment of milled or kiln-dried material is moisture-tested at point of loading. Readings accompany your delivery documentation.
De-Nailing Guarantee
All processed material passes multi-point metal detection. If your equipment encounters a hidden fastener, we cover repair costs up to $500 per incident.
Accurate Quantity
Board footage is tally-counted and documented. Shipment weight and piece count are verified before loading. Short deliveries are credited immediately.
Species Accuracy
Species identification is performed by trained staff. If a species is misidentified and materially affects your project, we will accept return of the material.
Clean & Ready
Processed inventory is free of surface mold, active insect activity, and structural rot to the grade specified. Any board not meeting this standard does not ship.
Common Buyer Questions
Can I inspect the lumber before purchasing?
Yes. We encourage in-person inspection at our Commerce, CA facility for orders over 500 board feet. For smaller orders, we can ship representative samples (typically 2–3 pieces) via UPS for a nominal fee, refundable against your order.
How do you grade reclaimed lumber?
We use a four-tier system adapted for reclaimed material: Select (structurally sound, minimal surface defects), #1 Common (some surface character, fully structural), #2 Common (moderate checks or staining, suitable for non-visible applications), and Utility (decoration or non-structural use only). Every order ships with a grade report.
What species do you typically carry in inventory?
Our inventory rotates but commonly includes Douglas fir, heart pine, redwood, western red cedar, oak, chestnut, elm, and mixed hardwoods. We also periodically source reclaimed teak, ipe, and tropical species from demolished commercial projects. Contact us for current stock.
How should I calculate how much lumber I need?
For flooring and paneling, add 10–15% waste factor to your square footage to account for cuts and defects. For structural framing, use your plans’ board-foot take-off directly with a 5% buffer. For feature pieces and live-edge slabs, we recommend ordering 20% extra. We are happy to review your project plans and recommend quantities.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept ACH bank transfer, check, all major credit cards, and wire transfer. Net-30 terms are available for qualified commercial accounts. A 50% deposit is required on custom milling orders and on orders exceeding $10,000.
Do you offer any guarantee on the lumber you sell?
Yes. All processed and graded material carries a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If the lumber does not meet the graded specifications stated on your order, we will replace it or issue a full refund. This guarantee does not cover wood movement or checking that occurs after installation due to moisture changes in the installation environment.
