Upfront Cost Comparison
Let us be transparent about pricing. Reclaimed Douglas Fir in #1 grade typically costs $5-7 per board foot, compared to $3-4 for new kiln-dried #2 grade Doug Fir from a traditional lumberyard. That is a 40-75% premium on a per-unit basis. For premium species like Heart Pine, the premium is even higher because the material simply cannot be sourced new.
However, reclaimed lumber frequently comes in true nominal dimensions (a full 2x4 rather than 1.5x3.5), giving you 15-30% more wood per piece. When you calculate cost per actual cubic inch of wood rather than per nominal board foot, the premium narrows significantly.
Hidden Value and Savings
The sticker price does not tell the whole story. Reclaimed lumber often eliminates or reduces these costs: artificial distressing treatments ($2-5/sq ft), staining to achieve "aged" appearance ($1-3/sq ft), LEED documentation fees (reclaimed materials earn credits that are among the cheapest to achieve), and replacement costs (old-growth density means longer service life).
For commercial tenants, reclaimed wood interiors have been shown to increase perceived property value and justify higher lease rates. A 2023 study by the National Association of Realtors found that sustainable building features, including reclaimed materials, increase commercial lease rates by 6-11% in urban markets.
Volume Pricing and Commercial Accounts
At GreenBoard, orders over 1,000 BF qualify for a 5% volume discount. Orders over 5,000 BF receive 10-15% discounts depending on species and grade. Commercial accounts with repeat orders receive priority inventory access, net-30 payment terms, and a dedicated account manager who tracks their specifications and preferences.
For architects and designers who specify reclaimed materials regularly, we offer a free sample library program — curated sets of species and grade samples that you can keep in your office for client presentations.
